Design and Characterization of a New Interface for a Mass Spectrometer Based Chemical Sensor

A new revised interface for the direct coupling of sample introduction systems to a Mass Selective Detector (MSD) has been designed. The new setup provides less potential air leaking problems by reducing the number of fittings between the sample introduction system and the MSD. Furthermore it is much more flexible due to the use of a Programmable Temperature Vaporizer (PTV) inlet. This inlet allows easy selection of the inlet mode (hot, cold, split, splitless) and it allows sample introduction other than Headspace. First experiments proved that the GERSTEL ChemSensor Interface is a suitable replacement for the open split interface currently offered. Besides Headspace analysis Solid Phase MicroExtraction (SPME) measurements can be performed in conjunction with the MultiPurposeSampler MPS 2.
