Automated Liquid Liquid Extraction of Epichlorohydrin using GC/MS

Application Note

Epichlorohydrin; a chemical used in the manufacturing of plastics, polymers and resins can leach into the water supply and is subject to a maximum guideline value in drinking water. A typical method employed is manual liquid-liquid extraction and it was identified that a potential increase in reproducibility could be achieved by automating the process. The work outlined in this application note was performed at ALS Environmental using the GERSTEL MPS with agitator (MVorx) and CF200 Centrifuge. The use of a high recovery vial enabled better enrichment of analytes as a smaller volume of extraction solvent can be used. The method has been validated to NS30 for drinking water with a recovery of 104% (at 8 µg/L) and an RSD of <5%, showing a large improvement in the manual procedure.
